I'm Actually In Australia!

G'DAY!

Meg McMillan and I have been in Australia two months now, and I am finally posting on the blog. sorry that it has taken so long! I guess that just means we are having such a good time that we haven't had a chance to post anything!

midterms have just ended, and now the work load is starting to get very intense! Robert Fausset recently sent me an email asking questions about Australia for the i blog, so I thought I would post some of my answers here as well, since I should probably be working on homework instead of posting on the blog.

here are the questions-

how is it how do you like it?

It is amazing! the city is really nice and everything is close by so its very convenient. I can walk from one side of the city to the other in about 45 minutes. I also really like all the architecture here, everything is very modern and innovative, but mixed in with older buildings from the Victorian style which makes it really interesting.

Any amazing experiences yet?

we went on a road trip across the southern coast and it was breathtaking. I haven't seen so many beautiful landscapes in my life. We went camping on Kangaroo island, and hiking up to the top of a mountain.

What do you miss about home?

believe it or not, I actually miss iarc a lot. I miss printing everything for cheap, and having all my supplies with me. I also miss being able to get a computer whenever I want. here the labs are filled with industrial design, architecture, landscape architecture and all kinds of different majors so its always packed. and of course I miss all my friends in iarc and my family.

What are you having time adjusting to?

at first I was having a hard time adjusting to not having a car. walking everywhere at first got really tiring, but now im getting lots of exercise. I am also still trying to adjust to the way they run studios. everything is way more relaxed and people don't show up until an hour after class starts. But even though it's very relaxed, they grade really hard! The teachers seem to have really high expectations for everyone.

What are you experiencing there you could never do here?

the wildlife! you don't see it much in the city, but if you get 30 minutes outside of Melbourne you have to be careful not to hit kangaroos with your car, and koalas are all over in the trees.

Our studio over their studio?

OUR STUDIO! I'm not used to how inconvenient and expensive everything is. without my car, if I want to go to studio at night I have to walk 25 minutes there and 25 minutes back, and sometimes I can't even get an open computer. it gets a little frustrating when you know you could be sitting in Gatewood labs with your friends, and in your pajamas instead of walking 25 minutes in the cold.

Why did you choose Australia?

I've always wanted to go to Australia since I was younger. also, I knew RMIT was in the city, and I wanted to experience city life to see if that was something I would be interested in when I am trying to apply for jobs in the future. and Australia has a good mix of city life, but amazing scenery and national parks that I can go to if I want to get away. As much as I love all the interior design and architecture here, it's pretty neat to see rain forests and waterfalls.

Hows the night life?

The night life is much better than Greensboro. There's always something to do every night of the week and lots of different choices. Just one street has at least five or six popular bars to choose from, and everything is really close by. I also love just going to different bars just to see how cool the design is. Every bar is very unique. They even have one bar that is designed around a doctors office where you take shots from a syringe.

Hows the people there?

Everybody in my studio are really friendly and helpful. I would not have been able to pass any of my assignments without them. The city has a lot of internationals as well, so I have met people from all over the world, all of which are nice and easygoing.

Most interesting thing you bought?

I actually haven't bought much yet because I've had to spend all my money on food, rent, and traveling. but I did buy some key chains with kangaroo fur on them at the marketplace.

If Australia was a candy bar what would it be?

cherry ripe... its a chocolate bar with cherry and coconut in the center. probably because Australia is a lot like America ( hence the chocolate)... but a little bit more exotic (coconut and cherry)

And include anything you want to share with everyone!!

here is my class blog link.......http://unhomely.tumblr.com/

its my studio class called (un)homely which deals with private vs. public space in an urban setting. all we have done so far is run around the city doing urban interventions. and our final project is going to deal with picking a space and designing something that will bring community together.

then I'm also taking a class called "drinking in detail" that is about bar design. I dont have much work to show yet because all we have done is visit bars and look at how they are designed and how people interact with the bartenders. but for our final we are designing our own bar. I'm pretty excited about that class. it's very interesting and I have some cool ideas I want to try for my design.
